It is a truth universally acknowledged that British people must have a national treasure they are obsessed with at any one time. At various points in the past decade or so—and for wildly varying reasons—there has been the Queen, Jamie Oliver, Maggie Smith, David Attenborough, Marcus Rashford and Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu. Most have seen their shine persist, while for others it has faded.

Oh, and there has also of late been Joe Wicks. Adoration for ‘The Body Coach’ soared when he began offering free online PE lessons for kids during the pandemic. The personal trainer, 37, was recently handed that national treasure starter accessory, an MBE, and continues to encourage his fans to lace up their trainers via his fitness platform (now, incidentally, a multimillion-pound business). Yet, last week, he ruffled some serious feathers.
