There’s a harrowing scream that penetrates the walls of my inner-city flat every so often. It’s a wail so loud that it feels like it’s in the next room, despite the source being in the neighbouring building, and often ends with the girlish voice in question calling out—as though in the middle of a tantrum—‘I want my mummy’.
