I didn’t know the full history of ME, thanks for this insightful article. Isn’t it something that two guys could change the course of history and affect so many lives?
While I don’t suffer from this pathology I have countless patients who do, I am a chiropractor. Seeing firsthand what it does to the neuromuscular skeletal system can be heartbreaking.
Thank you so much for your kind words Donna - yes I think the impact of those two men (desperately misguided rather than malicious, I hope!) really can’t be understated, but I’m praying that things are now on the right track!
Thank you Lauren, your article bought back memories of a friend, a very talented musician, who suffered from ME, in the late 1980s. She was completely disabled by it and became a recluse because of the stigma that surrounded ME. It was heartbreaking to watch, and it is so difficult to explain how much damage judgemental comments about someone’s illness can be.
Life has since got in the way but I often think about her. Experiencing chronic debilitating and fluctuating illness is bad enough, but to the judgement of others into the mix, is unimaginable, toxic and anti-therapeutic. xxxxx
Thank you so much for your kind words Jo! I’m so sorry to hear about your friend - her story breaks my heart, and I really hope that she is doing better now. I completely agree that it’s horrendous enough dealing with the life-changing, frightening symptoms with no effective treatment/ cure, but the response/ lack of support from others can inflict the most pain of all - and I really hope that stigma sufferers can feel is starting to fade! xxxxx
Fascinating and heartbreaking. Thank you for writing this x
